What Are Your True Colors?

On the Dewey Color System site there is a quiz about colors and how they can show your leanings and preferences in career building. I'm slightly past the day when I'm looking at my first career, but I am working on the career for this stage of my life. Tests like this always fascinate me. Kids today have so many resources to discover who they are, how they think and where they should be going on their career path.

Take this test (choose) and see what it says about you. I picked colors I liked to look at and disliked, until this is what the test said about me. I think it is pretty accurate:

The Dewey Color System® is the world's first and only validated, color-based personality career testing instrument. Based on our experience and your interests, your best suited occupations are listed below.

Best Occupational Category
You're a CREATOR
Key Words:
Nonconforming, Impulsive, Expressive, Romantic, Intuitive, Sensitive, and Emotional

These original types place a high value on aesthetic qualities and have a great need for self-expression. They enjoy working independently, being creative, using their imagination, and constantly learning something new. Fields of interest are art, drama, music, and writing or places where they can express, assemble, or implement creative ideas.

CREATOR OCCUPATIONS
Suggested careers are Advertising Executive, Architect, Web Designer, Creative Director, Public Relations, Fine or Commercial Artist, Interior Decorator, Lawyer, Librarian, Musician, Reporter, Art Teacher, Broadcaster, Technical Writer, English Teacher, Architect, Photographer, Medical Illustrator, Corporate Trainer, Author, Editor, Landscape Architect, Exhibit Builder, and Package Designer.

CREATOR WORKPLACES
Consider workplaces where you can create and improve beauty and aesthetic qualities. Unstructured, flexible organizations that allow self-expression work best with your free-spirited nature.

Suggested Creator workplaces are advertising, public relations, and interior decorating firms; artistic studios, theaters and concert halls; institutions that teach crafts, universities, music, and dance schools. Other workplaces to consider are art institutes, museums, libraries, and galleries.

2nd Best Occupational Category
You're a PERSUADER
Key Words:
Witty, Competitive, Sociable, Talkative, Ambitious, Argumentative, and Aggressive

These enterprising types sell, persuade, and lead others. Positions of leadership, power, and status are usually their ultimate goal. Persuasive people like to take financial and interpersonal risks and to participate in competitive activities. They enjoy working with others inside organizations to accomplish goals and achieve economic success.

I have been a dessert girl, ticket checker, assistant to a university president secretary, preschool teacher, elementary teacher, reading teacher, assistant librarian, P.E. teacher, a coach, a Bible study leader, book reviewer, acquisitions reader, Sunday School children's department leader, executive school board officer, curriculum advisor, an editor, a fiction consultant, columnist and a writer.

If I could go back in time, I would have found the career path to be an editor,I think, preferably in fiction, or I would have been an artist or cartoonist (I did have a cartoon strip in the high school newspaper, back in the day.) My other interest is in educational learning modes and theories.

Anyway, this was interesting. If you're a parent,it's something you might think about allowing your teen/young adult to take, too, but it can reveal something about you, at whatever stage in life you are in. And maybe it will help in your own writing, knowing what direction to go.You might be at a turning point in life, wanting to find a new career path.Or maybe your main character needs to take the test.(Now there's a thought.)

So, if you could go back, would you have taken a different turn on that path? Looking forward, how can you use this information in your writing or what you are doing now? Do tell!

  2. It can be fun to imagine "what if" with our pasts. But then again, if I had chosen any other course, then I would have missed knowing many wonderful people who have enriched my life. The grass may seem greener on the other side of the fence (terribly old cliché!), but at the same time others look at the grass beneath our own feet and think, "Wow, I sure would like to be over there!"

  3. I know what you say is true, Rick, but I do think that even if we make poor choices for our own personalities, God CAN use them for good. I certainly have found that to be true. Being in God's will is where we want to be. True.

However, sometimes discerning that path and God's will isn't always clear, no matter how spiritual you are (without going into a denominational or theological vein...)

If you know truths about yourself, then you realize that some choices are not for you. But what I've found is that no matter my "job," I naturally would work in it the way that I am designed.

I AM NOT saying that you should envy another's path or the grass he's standing on. You misunderstand. I'm saying that if you find what God has designed you for doing, then you can definitely use these things in saying yes or no to certain choices. I'm glad I made certain choices, but sometimes as a young person I would listen to an elder who clearly did not understand ME and then I would do that, being unhappy and knowing that God didn't want me there (and I was unhappy not because it was bad, but because I wasn't going where God designed me to be.)

Clear as mud, I'm sure. Ha.

  4. This test was fascinating! I don't know what the top 25 jobs were that I'd most enjoy because I'm not going to pay to find out, but I'd been involved in all but 2 of the others listed and the top twelve read like my personal history.

I always said I wouldn't change a thing because the past made me who I am today. Lately I've been second guessing that. My choices today color my future. That said, I think I'll take an aspirin and lay down.

  5. Fascinating! I bet I'm a creator because this is the first system I've seen that puts lawyers and authors in the same group!

  6. Mary, keep creating! :)

Cara, if you think about this, it makes sense. This test made the most practical sense to me and many of my most enjoyable "jobs" that I've held played into this description.

Anyway, I think color very much influences us. It's a fascinating theory of discovering the way God wired us.
